The head of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) today met with Tanzania’s finance minister to discuss the country’s progress towards achieving the social development and poverty alleviation targets known as Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).Discussions between UNDP Administrator Helen Clark and Mustafa Mkulo focused particularly on efforts to halt the spread of HIV/AIDS, empowering women, and enrolling more children in primary school. They also touched on the “Delivering as One” initiative – a programme under which countries work closely with UN entities to facilitate development – which they said had made a significant contribution to Tanzania’s anti-poverty strategy. On Sunday, Miss Clark visited Tanzania’s semi-autonomous island of Zanzibar, where she had a meeting with President Amani Abeid Karume. She also visited the Jozani-Chwaka Bay Conservation Area, the single most important site for the conservation of Zanzibar’s biodiversity. UNDP supported the creation of the park and helped the Government put in place policies and legislative processes that made conservation possible. The conservation zone consists of a protected core area of 34 square kilometres and a buffer zone of 48 square kilometres. It is a shallow open bay that supports the largest block of mangrove forest on Zanzibar and a wintering population of crab plovers, a bird species unique in making use of ground warmth to incubate its eggs.It is also home to other unique species of birds, plants, invertebrates and mammals, including the red colobus monkey and the Ader’s Duiker antelope, as well as the Zanzibar leopard, which may have disappeared as it has not been seen for two years. The area is a growing tourist attraction. The Jozani forest welcomes 20,000 visitors per year, more than 17 per cent of the total foreign tourists who visit Zanzibar. UNDP supported the local authorities in creating the national park, which protects the Jozani forest. On arrival in Tanzania for the four-day visit on Saturday, Miss Clark had a meeting with Tanzania’s foreign minister Bernard Membe, during which they discussed UNDP’s support of the electoral process, including help on voter registration and civic education in the run-up to national elections in October. On Tuesday, Miss Clark will visit the National Electoral Commission and meet recently-registered voters who will vote for the first time this year.Miss Clark’s mission to four Africa countries has already taken her to Mali and Burkina Faso, and will also include a visit to South Africa.

Brock University’s Goodman School of Business is the first business school in Canada to form a co-op partnership with the United Nations Association in Canada (UNA-Canada).The new partnership will make it possible for Goodman students to work at a United Nations agency on an eight-month co-op work term, starting in September, while receiving up to $1,000 from Brock’s Co-op Education office and an additional $8,000 in financial support from the business school resulting from the Goodman Family Foundation gift made to the school in 2012.In its 23rd year, UNA-Canada’s International Development and Diplomacy Internship Programme includes a network of more than 600 Canadian youth who have worked in various roles in many countries around the world.Although the internship program has connected hundreds of interns with international work opportunities, this is the first time UNA-Canada has partnered with a university co-op program. The partnership opens a world of possibilities for students who could be placed in any country while working as a junior professional consultant in a specific area of business including business analytics, finance, accounting, strategic communications and international trade.Goodman School of Business Dean Andrew Gaudes said the partnership means students will have access to opportunities that will give them a global perspective.“We recognize that non-governmental organizations and social responsibility are important elements in addressing global needs,” he said. “Through this collaboration, our students have a wonderful opportunity to be placed around the world to be prepared for a wide variety of needs. We’re addressing individual students’ personal and professional fulfilment objectives and recognizing that they are interested in participating and contributing in a meaningful way beyond the boardroom.”Past junior professional consultants have worked for the United Nations Development Programme in Cambodia, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Peru and International Organization for Migration in Ghana.Like all Brock University co-op work terms, UNA-Canada co-op opportunities will be evaluated to ensure students are provided with valuable transferable skills that are relevant to their degrees. The program will also help students launch careers in international business and give them an understanding of Canada’s role within the United Nations system.Selected students will be provided with pre-departure training and orientation sessions and will be coached by UNA-Canada throughout their work term.UNA-Canada President and CEO Kathryn White said the partnership will make a lasting impression on students who are selected.“UNA-Canada is very pleased to work with our valued partner, Goodman School of Business, to provide remarkable international development experiences for Canadian youth with our UN partners where they will get to accelerate their careers and build long-lasting networks,” she said. The opportunity is open to all Goodman School of Business undergraduate and graduate co-op students. Interested students can apply for the UNA-Canada positions through the CareerZone job board. Applications are due May 20.

Liverpool legend Graeme Souness still has some doubts over Fabinho, despite his recent promising displaysThe Brazilian midfielder arrived at Anfield last summer for £43.7m from AS Monaco, but struggled to break into the team at the beginning.Nowadays though, Fabinho has become a prominent member of the Liverpool squad and was praised for his impressive performance in their 3-1 win over Manchester United last month. But Souness still has some surprise doubts over the 25-year-old.“I believe Liverpool will bounce back,” Souness wrote in his Sunday Times column.Jose Mourinho is sold on Lampard succeeding at Chelsea Tomás Pavel Ibarra Meda – September 14, 2019 Jose Mourinho wanted to give his two cents on Frank Lampard’s odds as the new Chelsea FC manager, he thinks he will succeed. There really…“They don’t have what I would call milky players. SEATTLE — As the proprietor of a medical marijuana dispensary in Seattle, Dawn Darington has seen patients wracked by AIDS and cancer. She’s also seen “patients” who show up for a free pot brownie and never come back. Now, Washington is pushing forward with plans to entice the latter into its new world of legal, taxed recreational pot, and advocates like Darington say they’re worried about where that’s going to leave those who actually need cannabis.A state work group on Monday is due to release its recommendations for how to regulate Washington’s freewheeling medical marijuana industry — recommendations that could include reductions in how much pot patients can have, an end to the collective gardens that have supplied the sick and the not-so-sick for the past 15 years, stricter requirements for obtaining medical marijuana authorizations, and taxes on medical pot.“I’m terrified a bunch of that, if not all of it, is going to be lost — that the recreational users have thrown us under the bus,” said Darington, of Choice Wellness Center. “When they put a tax on the sale of Viagra is the day I am willing to sit at the table and discuss putting a tax on this medicine.”Voters in Washington and Colorado last fall legalized marijuana for recreational use, and the states are preparing to allow its sale at licensed stores. In Colorado, medical marijuana is already regulated and subject to sales tax, with 109,000 registered patients, and it isn’t clear to what extent it might undermine the recreational market.
Back in December 2014, Brewton was shot in the head. He credits God for helping him get through it. “The man above. Without Him, and without prayers from family, the church, I don’t know where I’d be.”Police said Brewton was one of nine young men targeted in a drive-by shooting. His family believes it was a Christmas miracle that Brewton, then 16, survived.“One thing about God … He never fails us,” Robinson said. “This family is full of miracles, and God has shown us another miracle here today. They said he wasn’t going to be able to walk, he wasn’t going to be able to drive, but if you witness him here now, you know that God is good.”During the ceremony, the families of Randall Robinson and Maurice Harris were recognized for their loss. The victims’ families received posthumous diplomas after they were killed in 2015.“We feel your pain, for we, too, feel deep loss for our classmates but please remember they will always be a part of our lives,” said one speaker. “In the words of Maya Angelou, ‘We may encounter many defeats, but we must never be defeated.’”The 17-year-olds were killed three days apart, just a block apart, when a car pulled up and the shooters got out and opened fire. The past year was a horrific one from Northwestern High School students, with eight students shot and five of them killed. Women’s rights advocates have slammed a torrent of online posts by men from across India who expressed enthusiasm about marrying women from Kashmir after India’s sudden removal of special rights from the disputed region made it more appealing to do so.”It’s deeply sexist,” said Rituparna Chatterjee, an activist writing a book on the #MeToo movement in India. “Women’s bodies have been battlegrounds for men for centuries. The latest comments of Kashmiri women, are only testimony to this fact,” she said.India struck down a constitutional provision on Monday that granted special status to residents of Jammu and Kashmir state, whose population is majority Muslim, including exclusive rights to owning property and getting state government jobs there.Under the previous rules, women from the state who married outsiders lost those rights, and outsiders couldn’t buy property in Kashmir. Now, residents of the state and people from other parts of India will be on an equal legal footing in Kashmir. As supporters of prime minister Narendra Modi and his ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party flooded social media with posts expressing jubilation about the constitutional change, many men among them said on Twitter and the video platform TikTok that this would make it easier for them to marry Kashmiris.”Congrats India now unmarried boys can marry these smart girls from Kashmir after 370 removal,” said one post, referring to the constitutional provision that was struck down. Another said: “Every Indian boy’s dream right now: 1. Plot in Kashmir 2. Job in Kashmir 3. Marriage with Kashmiri girl.”Adding to those voices on Wednesday was Vikram Saini, a BJP lawmaker, who was seen in a video urging party workers to marry “Kashmiri girls.””We can get the bachelors among our party workers married there now, there is no problem,” Saini says in the video standing in front of a Modi poster at a rally in northern India. “Our Muslim party workers should be happy, now they can go and marry fair-skinned Kashmiri girls.”Mihira Sood, a Supreme Court lawyer in New Delhi, who specialises in gender issues, called it “objectification of women.””It’s one thing if someone thinks that Article 370 should have gone, but a whole another to be chest-beating about it like this,” she said. “Kashmiri women are not spoils of war. They are human beings with agency and the right to consent or not consent.”The internet is abound with articles extolling the virtues of Kashmiri women – and some talk about Kashmiri men in similar ways – emphasising their fair skin. Data on Google Trends showed searches for “Kashmiri girl” in India surged from 5 August onwards.
A new Shaft movie is bringing audiences three iconic detectives for the price of one. The trailer for latest installment Shaft (formerly Son of Shaft) has premiered on Jimmy Kimmel Live, starring Samuel L. Jackson, Jessie Usher and original “bad mother…” Richard Roundtree.Samuel L. Photo by Tony Shek CC by 2.0Usher picks up the baton as John “JJ” Shaft III, an MIT-trained FBI agent and computer expert who turns to his father (Jackson) to help solve the case of his deceased best friend.Things haven’t been right between the pair for a while, and what better way for the family to reunite than over a few fights and explosions?Samuel L. Jackson. Photo by pinguino k CC BY 2.0According to Deadline, “while JJ’s own FBI analyst’s badge may clash with his dad’s trademark leather duster, there’s no denying family. Besides, Shaft’s got an agenda of his own, and a score to settle that’s professional and personal.”The trailer showcases a raft of quips, punches and clashes between the generations. “I’m an equal opportunity ass whooper!” Jackson exclaims, in response to his son’s horror over him fighting a woman.Directed by Tim Story (Barbershop) and written by Kenya Barris (Black-ish), the movie is produced by John Davis and based on characters created by Ernest Tidyman.Kenya Barris. Photo by Peabody Awards CC BY 2.0His novel inspired Gordon Parks’ 1971 blaxploitation classic, starring future grandfather Roundtree. The author wrote five Shaft books. His last was 1975’s The Last Shaft.Tidyman was white, but wanted to create a better black character than the ones on offer. Speaking to the LA Times in 1972 he revealed “The blacks I knew were smart and sophisticated, and I thought, what about a black hero who thinks of himself as a human being, but who uses his black rage as one of his resources, along with intelligence and courage.”Blackflix.com wrote, “The original John Shaft was the ‘black’ answer to James Bond. He made love and killed in the same afternoon and had a cool theme song. With his militant attitude and black leather trench coat, he flawlessly delivered unprintable one-liners and smooth Bogart comebacks.”Irish actor Pierce Brosnan as James Bond, in a publicity still for the film ‘GoldenEye’, c. 1995. He is holding his iconic Walther PPK with a silencer. Photo by Terry O’Neill/Iconic Images/Getty ImagesRoundtree wasn’t a fan of the term “blaxploitation”. He was quoted as saying, “I find that word offensive with anything that Gordon Parks has done. Exploitation, and then put black in front of it! That is a very ugly term from where I sit. And the ugliest part about it was the black press started it.”Nevertheless, Shaft became an icon. Two sequels were made, Shaft’s Big Score! (1972) and Shaft In Africa (1973). Isaac Hayes’ famous theme song has always accompanied the “cat who won’t cop out when there’s danger all about,” and is heard during the new trailer.Gordon ParksA short-lived TV version (1973-4) toned down the character and was criticized before director John Singleton got things back on track with Jackson in 2000. That same year Shaft was selected for preservation by the Library of Congress. While Jackson’s version of Shaft was lean and mean, he’s dialed it down almost 20 years on. “He’s mellowed a bit,” the actor told Entertainment Weekly in 2018. “He’s not quite as crazy and cynical. Maybe a bit more devil-may-care the last time we saw him. But still an extremely dangerous and funny character.”As with Roundtree, it’s hoped playing Shaft will turn Jessie Usher into a superstar. He’s best known for his role in Survivor’s Remorse and appeared in 2016’s Independence Day: Resurgence. He also took part in Creed II, another franchise (Rocky) that’s been brought back with a family twist. How Success Happens September 6, 2007 2 min read Brought to you by PCWorld Just when you think that color-laser printer prices can’t get any lower, they do. Dell’s new Color Laser Printer 1320c debuts at the top of our chart this month, with a killer price and competent overall performance. Its most notable achievement: surprisingly smooth photo quality for a low-end laser. Its major drawback: tiny, pricey toner cartridges. Replacing all four of them at once could cost almost as much as the printer itself (though that’s not an unusual phenomenon; many inexpensive color lasers’ toner sets cost as much as or even more than the printer itself). You’ll get a better cost per page out of the other new arrival, the fourth-place Brother HL-4040CN; it also boasts supercrisp text quality (a bit better than the Dell’s). Chenoweth and Menzel were original stars of the Broadway production. (Eric Liebowitz/NBC via AP) NEW YORK, N.Y. – Fifteen years ago, one of the top films in the land was “Finding Nemo” and Shania Twain played the Super Bowl halftime show. 50 Cent’s “Get Rich or Die Tryin’” was a hit album and a couple of witches-to-be took over Broadway. The musical “Wicked” shook off some tepid reviews to roar into Broadway history and this Monday is celebrating its coming-of-age with a Halloween-themed NBC special starring its original stars Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel, as well as Ariana Grande.“First of all, I can’t believe it’s been 15 years. I think it was yesterday. And yet it feels like it’s been 15 years. So there’s that I’m battling in my brain,” says Chenoweth, laughing. “I just wanted to be in a show that someone would have heard of.”Mission, accomplished: “Wicked” is Broadway’s sixth longest running show and is regularly sold out, last week commanding a $120 average ticket. There is currently a North American tour, a West End production and another touring the United Kingdom. The ice cream company Ben & Jerry’s has launched a special sandwich in its honour. The musical reimagines the relationship between the Good Witch of the North (Chenoweth) and the Wicked Witch of the East (Menzel), who were introduced in L. Frank Baum’s “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” and immortalized in a 1939 film adaptation. The songs by Stephen Schwartz include “Defying Gravity,” ”Popular” and “For Good.”“I knew it was something special,” says Menzel, who had already achieved success in “Rent” when she tried out for “Wicked” director Joe Mantello. She said she shook while rehearsing the songs: “I knew I thought it was important and it moved me when I first auditioned and got a call-back.”Critics were not always kind, with The New York Times sniffing that the musical “does not, alas, speak hopefully for the future of the Broadway musical.” Variety called it “lumbering, overstuffed” and New York’s Daily News described it as “an interminable show with no dramatic logic or emotional centre.”Fans politely disagreed. The show went on to win a Grammy Award and three Tony Awards, opening in 16 countries including Brazil, South Korea, Germany, Japan, Australia and Latin America. The musical premiered long before the #MeToo movement but has benefited from its focus on two young women — one seemingly perfect in looks and popularity, the other a restless, green-skinned outsider — finding their voices and forging a bond despite their differences.“It’s a testament to the piece, to how good ‘Wicked’ is that 15 years later, it’s even more important and really resonates with this movement that we’re in. And how wonderful to have two female-centric characters who end up supporting each other and loving each other and changing each other and accepting in each other what makes them different and special,” says Menzel.“It’s also really timely because we have a voice right now and ‘Wicked’ is about not being ashamed to have that voice when it’s powerful and even angry and fierce. We can’t be afraid of how that will be perceived. We have to own that. Harnessing that kind of power is what really makes change and what true beauty is.”Chenoweth agrees: “I love that ‘Wicked’ was done and such a success and that movies like ‘Frozen’ are done because it’s a recurring theme to our new generation of girls — be strong, be courageous, stick up for who you are and what you are and what you believe.”NBC’s special was filmed Oct. 16 not at Broadway’s “Wicked” home in the Gershwin Theatre but in the empty Marquis Theatre. “A Very Wicked Halloween” will also feature Pentatonix, Adam Lambert and Ledisi.“Wicked” came at an important time for Menzel, whose career was struggling after she was dropped by her record company. The character of Elphaba was the perfect role for the actress, who would go on to sing “Let It Go” for “Frozen.”“I was really insecure. I hadn’t worked in a little bit and so I was trying to find my process. I was competing and I was battling my own insecurities just like my character was.” Menzel would win a Tony for the role.Chenoweth, a Tony- and Emmy Award-winner who would go on to have parts on “The West Wing,” ”Glee” and NBC’s “Hairspray Live!,” remembers first getting a taste of “Wicked” when Schwartz asking her to stop by his Los Angeles home to hear him sing her “Popular.” She adored it but made it her own by adding a little flip, making it “pop-u-lar.” She insists she knew “Wicked” was going to be big.Just how big?“I just remember thinking: ‘This is so big. I feel this could be big. Like, I think this could be ‘Cats,’” she says, laughing. “And I’ll leave you with that.”___Online: https://www.nbc.com/a-very-wicked-halloween-celebrating-15-years-on-broadway___Mark Kennedy is at http://twitter.com/KennedyTwits
