Five companies are at the forefront of making alternative energy viable on the continent.Solynta EnergySolynta Engineering Team in action! #solar#nigeria#lagos# pic.twitter.com/vcoDDeKIpo— Solynta Energy (@SolyntaEnergy) October 6, 2015Founded by Lagos entrepreneur Uvie Ugono in Nigeria in 2013, Solynta provides solar panel installations to Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa. Operating with little corporate support, the company focuses on installing systems onto schools, healthcare facilities and small businesses. The company also operates a number of solar “filling stations” around Nigeria that offers consumer education, repairs and pre-loaded solar panels.Off Grid ElectricOur customers rely on their mobile devices to make payments https://t.co/3SxVFpiE6c pic.twitter.com/K8YcDs2j7t— Off Grid Electric (@OffGridE) August 18, 2016This Tanzanian small-scale power supplier uses the M-Pesa mobile money service to provide solar power systems, including LED lighting systems, to rural areas. The self-sustaining solar system complete with panels and lithium battery can be installed for as little as US$6 (about R82). It has installed over 10 000 systems in rural Tanzania and Rwanda. The company raised over $25-million (about R344-million) in 2015 that goes towards providing systems, maintenance support and technical training.Ugesi GoldUgesi Gold and EnergyNet’s off-grid energy solution starts generating power at SA school https://t.co/T4tJXNVYIA pic.twitter.com/QHrR3u8jKf— Damilola Ade (@aadedamilola) February 17, 2016A South African energy start-up, Ugesi Gold provides solar battery charging stations, called SolarTurtles, in rural areas where users can charge solar battery packs which are then carried home. Started in 2013, Juabar travelling solar-powered phone charging kiosks use 50W solar-PV systems to charge up to 20 mobile phones or small electronic appliances at once. The company charges $600 (about R8 200) for start-up equipment and aftersales technical support to entrepreneurs who want to offer charging services to the approximately 30-million mobile users in the country. The stations are also used as mini-hubs for the community “to interact with, learn about, and create their own solar energy solutions.”SolarKiosk@solarkiosk empowers the sustainable economic development of BoP communities through clean energy services and products. #CleanSolcution pic.twitter.com/6D9AGbt4MF— GoodFestival 2016 (@GoodPowWow) October 22, 2016Operating in Kenya and Ethiopia, SolarKiosk converts traditional kiosk-stores with solar panels, enabling it to run on its own power and provide additional services to consumers, including battery charging, refrigeration and internet access. The converted kiosks provide a vital connection for rural communities to the rest of the world. The concept has been featured at the global ideas hub Tedx and won several international innovation awards.Source: AFKInsiderSouthAfrica.info reporterWould you like to use this article in your publication or on your website? Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Memeo, the company behind a host of backup, sharing and synchronization tools and mobile applications, has just launched Memeo Connect 2.0, an updated version of its earlier desktop-to-cloud synchronization service for Google Docs.Like its progenitor, Memeo Connect still offers drag-and-drop uploads, but in the latest release, the application’s operating system integration has been dramatically improved. Most notably, your Google Docs folder now appears as a virtual drive that Memeo labels “GDrive”, and, according to company representatives, the name is being used with Google’s blessing. But Is it Really a “GDrive”?To Internet early adopters, the name “GDrive” rings more than a few bells. It’s referring to the long-rumored cloud storage service that Google has yet to launch. In its imagined state, Google’s GDrive would have been a lot like Microsoft’s SkyDrive: several gigabytes of free storage available on the Web for all your files. On the theoretical GDrive, however, files could be in any format, of any size and there would be easy ways to sync them or move them back and forth between your computer and the cloud. Office files would open with Google’s Docs service, an online counterpart to desktop programs like Microsoft Office, and some even imagined that GDrive would further integrate with other Google properties, like Picasa for photos or YouTube for videos. Google never fully realized everyone’s GDrive dreams, but its Google Docs service is functional enough for most. It allows for the upload of any file type while multiple third-party services offer decent options for keeping files in sync between your computers and cloud. These include Memeo competitors like Box.net, Dropbox, Syncplicity, SugarSync, OfficeSync, Gladinet and more. There are few programs that actually offer the full virtual drive functionality that Memeo now does, though. The company worked closely with Google to build this latest version of its Connect software and when Google engineers found out Memeo was calling the virtual folder it creates “GDrive,” they had a good laugh. Sorry, Internet, Google isn’t designing its own GDrive service anytime soon, but it’s well aware of the rumors. Google actually prefers that, when it comes to GDrive-type offerings, third parties do it for them. The closest thing we’ll see to a Google-branded tool of any sort is a desktop uploader application now being built, sources tell us. But it’s no GDrive, based on what we’ve heard. Version 2.0: More OS Integration Blurs Line Between Desktop and CloudIn Memeo’s case, version 2.0 of its software continues to offer drag-and-drop uploads (even folders!) and automatic synchronization. But it goes further with a combination of features that make using its so-called GDrive a more viable option. For example, you can save files from your desktop-based applications like Microsoft Office directly to Google Docs via GDrive, and you can open GDrive-hosted files with its associated native desktop program. In other words, it blurs the line between the cloud and the desktop, just as Google’s mythical GDrive would have supposedly done. And for that reason, we don’t at all begrudge Memeo the name “theft.” Memeo Connect‘s other new features include the ability to select multiple files at once for deletion (from the cloud), filter files by type or category, download all Google Docs with a click, view folders shared with you via Google Docs and more. And let’s not forget one of the most exciting new features: full text search for documents, another benefit of the in-depth collaboration between Memeo and Google when building this new version of Connect. To truly transition to cloud-hosted files, this feature is considered a must-have for many users. Related Posts For Business Users Only?Memeo Connect is more business-focused than it is a consumer tool. It’s not available as a “freemium” offering, as some would expect. Surprisingly, that’s not Memeo’s decision, but rather Google’s. Google restricts its API usage for these types of synchronization services so that they only work with those who have business-level accounts. As far as pricing goes, for Google Premier users, it’s $9 a year per user and for non-Premier users, it’s $59 a year per user, which includes a new Google Apps Premier Account in addition to the sync service. Memeo Connect 2.0 is available for free evaluation from here. Both Mac and PC versions are available. sarah perez Tags:#cloud computing#enterprise#Google#NYT#web#Web Office A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market
It’s easy to export multiple videos simultaneously using this Adobe Premiere Pro quick tip.Exporting footage directly in Premiere Pro can be incredibly frustrating because it essentially locks up your entire program. This is especially annoying if you are working on a project with a quick turn-around.Thankfully, the good people at Adobe have made exporting multiple timelines in Adobe Premiere Pro super-easy. This feature can run in the background and allows you to run multiple timelines simultaneously without freezing up your entire workflow. It’s a pretty easy concept to understand. Simply follow these quick steps:1. Export MediaSelect your desired timeline and navigate to File>Export>Media, or use the keyboard and hit Command+M.2. Adjust Export Settings as NeededAdjust your export settings to your desired preferences. If you need help with this, you can learn more in our Everything You Need to Know About Exporting Video post.3. Click “Queue”After you hit the Queue button, Adobe Media Encoder will automatically open (if it’s not open already.) The video should pop up as an item in the list.4. Repeat as NeededContinue to add all of your desired files to the queue.5. Click the “Play” Button in Adobe Media EncoderHit the green “play” button in Adobe Media Encoder to begin exporting. You can also change your export settings by selecting the yellow text. There are two distinct advantages to using this method to export video files. The main reason is you can export multiple videos instead of just one. This allows you to finish editing all of your videos then export in one big batch.Another advantage is the fact that it uses Adobe Media Encoder instead of Premiere Pro. This is important because it means you can simultaneously edit video and export at the same time. This can definitely save a lot of time.Want to see more Premiere Pro quick tips? WASHINGTON, MA — Below is a press release from Congressman Seth Moulton’s Office:This week week, the US Environmental Protection Agency has placed the Olin Superfund site in Wilmington on the Administrator’s Emphasis List, meaning it is on the top of the EPA’s to-do list.In a press release announcing the news, the EPA cited the community’s coordinated effort to demonstrate the sites potential for economic development.Representative Seth Moulton (MA-06) has been working with state and local leaders and the community’s business owners to prime the area for redevelopment.“Cleaning up our environment creates jobs and improves our cities and towns–not to mention leaving a healthier planet for our kids. Wilmington will be safer and healthier, and its economy will be stronger, when the Olin Site is restored,” Moulton said. “We got this designation thanks to the strong cooperation between local businesses and leaders at every level–clearly the EPA saw the united front within our community to fix this problem.”“I am very pleased to hear about this great news that the EPA expedited the Olin Chemical Site,” added State Representative Dave Robertson. “This is the culmination of literally years of work, debate, and cooperation by the town, state and federal governments. I hope that the work proceeds quickly, and I will be sure to watch closely with Congressman Moulton to ensure the clean-up is not rushed, but rather to the standards that Wilmington residents deserve.”The EPA added the Olin Chemical Superfund site to its Administrator’s Emphasis on April 1, 2019, with “the goal of expediting the selection of a remedy to remediate soil, surface water, and areas of highest ground contamination”. Since the list’s inception, 15 cites across the country have been added and successfully removed from the list.Like Wilmington Apple on Facebook. Follow Wilmington Apple on Twitter. A Bangladeshi man was convicted for trafficking his wife in India, along with the owner of the hotel where she was used for prostitution, reports Times of India. The man allegedly had sold his wife to the hotel-owner, who himself raped her and later used her for sex trade, the English-language Indian daily adds. The four-year legal battle ended on Tuesday with the convictions of the Abdul Gaffar, a Bangladeshi national convicted of trafficking and illegal immigration of his Bangladeshi wife, and the hotel-owner, Bhagyadhar Dhibar, to whom he had sold his wife.Dhibar raped the victim and later exploited her in his hotel and elsewhere. He was convicted of inducing, trafficking and abetting illegal immigration of a woman. Both were sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment. The victim has been repatriated to Bangladesh.Chief judicial magistrate Kundan Kumar Kumai of the City Sessions Court passed the order, convicting Gaffar under Sections 366B and 370 of the IPC and Section 14C of Foreigners Act of India. The charges include punishment for “importation” of a woman from a foreign country and trafficking her for the purpose of prostitution. Dhibar was convicted under Sections 366, 366B, 370 and 120B of the IPC. The charges against him include luring into illicit sexual act.Police said the case dates back to 1 September 2013 when officials from Immoral trafficking section of the detective department were alerted by a member of NGO Durbar Mahila Samanyay Committee. The NGO had found the woman in the custody of a man in the red-light area of Sonagachi.Acting on the tip-off, police rescued the woman and arrested Gaffar. Dhibar was arrested two days later.Police found that Gaffar had wooed the woman and told her that he had a job in India. On reaching Kolkata, he sold her to Dhibar, who himself raped her and had eight or nine men rape her in his own hotel and in brothels of Sonagachi as well. Gaffar would also surface, and bring in “customers” for his wife. The woman was brought to International Justice Mission (IJM) and provided legal support and counselling. Saji Philip, director of operation, IJM, which is a global human rights organisation working for victims of violence, said, “This case is utterly inhuman because the culprit is her own husband.”Marie Riba, the woman’s advocate, said, “The victims of human trafficking are real, and like us they have every right to seek justice. The public need to know that those who rob them of those rights will be severely punished.” She said the victim has been sent to her Bangladesh home and efforts are on to reintegrate her in society.
