to address disease killing as many as HIV/AIDS On World Hepatitis Daythe World Hepatitis Alliance has called for urgent attention to be given to recent figures showing that although viral hepatitis kills as many as HIV/AIDSthe great majority of countries have no programmes in place to tackle it The Global Burden of Disease study released last year in the Lancet shows that viral hepatitis was responsible for almost 145 million deaths in 2010the same as HIV/AIDS and significantly more than TB or Malaria Despite this enormous annual death tollleaders in global health consistently leave it off their agendas ‘Viral hepatitis is the 8th leading cause of death worldwidekilling as many people as HIV/AIDS every single year’ says Charles GorePresident of the World Hepatitis Alliance ‘500 million people worldwide are chronically infected In the face of these numbers how is it possible that viral hepatitis receives so little priority across the world’ Currentlydiseases receive attention and funding depending on their global priority However the global priority list does not necessarily reflect the real burden of disease This has led to responses that are disproportionate to disease impactand has left some diseases tragically under-resourced Viral hepatitis is a clear example; despite its huge burden there is little global pressure to address it Consequentlythe majority of governments have failed to dedicate resources to viral hepatitiseven in countries where prevalence is up to 20% The Global Report released by the World Health Organization last week showed the extent to which viral hepatitis is ignored Only 37% of countries have a national strategy or plan for viral hepatitisand less than 30% reported having a department responsible solely for viral hepatitis related activities The lack of response to the world’s 8th biggest killer is truly baffling Not only does it put millions of lives at risk by allowing this silent epidemic to growit leaves the 500 million people who are chronically infected wholly abandoned without support or recognition In 2010 the World Health Organisation openly recognised that viral hepatitis is a major cause for concern by making World Hepatitis Day one of only 7 world health days officially recognised by WHO and all Member States Howevermajor changes to the global health landscape are yet to be seen This World Hepatitis Daythe World Hepatitis Alliance has therefore launched a mass awareness campaign under the theme ‘This is hepatitis Know it Confront it’ to encourage people to find out more and to confront the silence around the disease The Alliance is also co-ordinating a global Guinness World Record attempt for the number of people performing the ‘see no evilhear no evilspeak no evil’ actions at the same timeactions chosen because in the same way the Three Wise Monkeys ignore the world around themso the world has been ignoring viral hepatitis With 58 teams from 25countries around the world taking partthis is a considerable challenge but with a clear message: viral hepatitis is a silent epidemic Know it Confront it The World Hepatitis Alliance is a non-governmental umbrella organisation with 165 member patient groups in 66 countries Representing 500 million people living with viral hepatitis worldwidethe Alliance strives to support and promote patient voicesto raise the profile of viral hepatitis and to establish comprehensive hepatitis strategies in all countries The World Hepatitis Alliance has been a dominant voice in achieving various successes for people living with hepatitisincluding leading the patient community in calling for the WHO resolution on hepatitis Through better awarenesspreventioncaresupport and access to treatmenttheir ultimate goal is to work with governments to eradicate these diseases World Hepatitis Alliance will coordinate the sixth global World Hepatitis Dayone of only four official disease-specific health awareness days recognised by the World Health Organization (WHO) and endorsed by its 194 member states The aim for 2013 is to raise awareness of chronic hepatitis B and C around the globe and to drive policy change for improvements in health outcomes for patients Hepatitis B and C- 500 million people are living with chronic viral hepatitis Hepatitis B and C are ‘silent’ virusesbecause people may experience no symptoms If left untreated and unmanagedhepatitis B or C can lead to advanced liver scarring (cirrhosis) liver cancer or liver failure For all the latest Lifestyle News download Indian Express App More Related by 31 percent in a group of 150000 poor women in Indiaresearchers reported on Sunday If implemented broadlythe screening program could lead to the prevention of 22000 deaths from cervical cancer in Indiaand 72000 deaths in the developing world each yearthe team reported at the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in Chicago “We had a 31 percent reduction in cervical cancer death That was very significant” Dr Surendra Shastri of Tata Memorial Hospital in MumbaiIndiawho led the study and presented the findings at the meeting The study also showed a 7 percent reduction in deaths from any causealthough that finding was not statistically significant Cervical cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among women in India and in many parts of the developing world “Low-cost screening programs such as described in India are desperately needed” said Dr Kathleen Schmeler of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston Shastri said currently there are no cervical cancer screening programs in Indiamainly because PAP smear screeningthe conventional test done among women in developed countriesis not possible because of issues such as logisticsinfrastructure and high costs “We hope our results will have a profound effect in reducing the burden of cervical cancer in India and around the world” Shastri said The study involved women selected from 20 slums in the city of Mumbai To overcome some of the social barriers of screeningthe team first met with religiouspolitical and community leaders to gain support for the program For the screening programthe team trained young women with at least a 10th grade education on how to apply the vinegar solution and evaluate the results As a result of these efforts”the screening participation rates were 89 percenthuge for a country like India” Shastri told the briefing The study involved women aged 35 to 64 with no previous history of cancer They were randomly assigned to either an education program to teach women how to recognize symptoms of cervical cancer or a screening program in which a vinegar solution is applied to the cervixwhich can make pre-cancerous tissues turn white and visible to the naked eye after only a minute The screening group got four rounds of this vinegar treatment and visual inspection plus cancer education every two years All of the women in the study were offered treatment for their cervical cancers Among women in the screening groupthere was a 31 percent reduction in cervical cancer deaths compared with women in the education-only group Based on the study resultsShastri said the Indian government plans to take up the screening program on a population basis In the state of Maharashtrawhere the trial was donehealth officials are preparing to train primary health care workers to provide the screening to all women in the state aged 35-64including women who took part in the control arm of the study who did not receive screening Doctors at the meeting said the program could offer a good alternative to PAP testing “What we’re talking about is the use of vinegar in a large screening program where PAP testing is not available There have been studies that have demonstrated that the accuracy of these programs is comparable” said Electra Paskettan ASCO spokeswoman and an expert in gynecologic cancers at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center Dr Monique Spillman of the University of Colorado Cancer Centersaid similar efforts have been tried in parts of Africa “This quick and cheap procedure could identify women who need to see a physician for treatment of cervical pre-cancer or cancerwhile reassuring women who have normal results” she said Schmeler of MD Anderson is conducting similar studies in Brazil and El Salvador using the vinegar technique in combination with testing for human papillomavirus or HPVthe virus that causes cervical cancerto try to improve on the accuracy of such screening programswhich can sometimes result in over treatment “The work we’re doing is to try to go to the next step to determine who are the false positives” Schmeler said For all the latest
