The 46-year-old Ruby was in the center of a debate over the humanity of keeping the large animals in small zoos. In the end, city officials agreed to let Ruby spend the rest of her days at the sanctuary in the Sierra foothills, but have not yet taken a firm position on whether the zoo should – and will continue to – keep elephants for display. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
