One month ago they were here, [Laurent] Koscielny, Nacho Monreal, they were the captains. I decided in that moment to wait to use every player for that vote. When the last player left from here – [Henrikh] Mkhitaryan – I didn’t want a player who is not going to be here to do one vote.‘I waited for the moment we closed the squad to decide. In pre-season we had three captains, they were Xhaka, Monreal and Mesut. I spoke, I want to be five. After Monreal left and Mkhitaryan we did that.‘I said to the players from me, we can have five players with that armband and represent as a captain but you are also with the capacity to be the leaders in the dressing room and the pitch. Everybody should use that capacity to help the time.’MORE: Martin Keown explains why Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang should be Arsenal captain instead of Granit XhakaMORE: Three reasons Unai Emery is making a mistake by appointing Granit Xhaka as Arsenal captain Granit Xhaka has been confirmed as Arsenal’s new captain (Picture: Getty)Unai Emery has challenged Granit Xhaka to win over Arsenal fans after he was confirmed as the club’s new captain. The Arsenal head coach has delayed naming Laurent Koscielny’s successor and took on board the recommendations of his first team squad before appointing the divisive Switzerland international.Xhaka, who turned 27 today, was booed after he was hauled off against Aston Villa last weekend after another error strewn performance but Emery insists he retains complete faith in the former Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder. On why Xhaka represented the obvious choice, Emery said: ‘First he’s mature. He has experience. We are living every time under pressure, under criticism, as a coach, as a player, as a club. But really the most important thing is to stand up each moment, go ahead with his qualities, with his behaviour, with his commitment.AdvertisementAdvertisementADVERTISEMENT‘In the dressing room the players voted him as the first leadership. I know, I spoke with him, we want to change that opinion outside. That respect he has inside is very, very important. Also show outside, keep moving ahead, playing, improving, behaviour, commitment. Each match is for him, for me, for us, a very good opportunity to show our capacity.More: FootballRio Ferdinand urges Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to drop Manchester United starChelsea defender Fikayo Tomori reveals why he made U-turn over transfer deadline day moveMikel Arteta rates Thomas Partey’s chances of making his Arsenal debut vs Man City‘But really I trust and believe in him. Our challenge and his challenge is to change that opinion, above all with a personality and improving each match, improving and giving us his help every time.’Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Hector Bellerin, Alexandre Lacazette and Mesut Ozil will form the rest of Arsenal’s leadership group, but Emery insists Xhaka’s new status will not render him an automatic selection.‘The performance is giving me the next first XI, the next players to play, not the captains,’ he said.
