Special fund set up for flooded Donegal businesses after Storm Lorenzo

first_imgA special flood fund has been activated for uninsured businesses that were affected by Storm Lorenzo in Donegal Town. The details of the fund have been announced by Minister Joe McHugh. He said the key here is that this Government is responding quickly to people’s need. “I have huge sympathy for anyone affected by sudden floods like the homeowners I visited last Friday. I know some businesses and some homes have no access to insurance and we are working to answer the need.“I have raised the concerns around Donegal Town with Minister of State for the Office of Public Works Kevin Boxer Moran and he appreciated the concerns locally and he will liaise directly with council officials.“One thing I saw last week, yet again when a community was affected by something, the community responded and credit should go to the school students from Abbey Vocational who went to help their neighbours in the hours after the floods. The same community spirit as we saw in Inishowen two years ago.“The emergency response agreed by Government today offers a one-off payment of up to €20,000 for a business that does not have insurance and was hit by the floods last Friday morning. “It’s a humanitarian fund. And it will provide for quick payments. Initially a flood-hit business can get a €5,000 payment and subsequently they can apply for another payment of up to €15,000.“A fund like this is vital in the aftermath of damage like we saw from Storm Lorenzo in Donegal Town. It can help businesses to get over the initial impact and for those unfortunate enough to have been hardest it will also help with the cost of repairs, new floors, damaged stock and new fixtures and fittings.”The decision was agreed at Cabinet after Minister McHugh’s colleague Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation Heather Humphreys brought a memo on response to the flood damage. The flood fund will be administered by the Irish Red Cross.Minister McHugh said: “Any business people in Donegal Town that have been operating without flood insurance should look at this Government support as option to get back up and running again.” A separate emergency fund is in place for homeowners who were hit by the floods in Donegal Town last week. It is a humanitarian response operated through Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection and any homeowner who needs support should contact their local Community Welfare Officer.Special fund set up for flooded Donegal businesses after Storm Lorenzo was last modified: October 10th, 2019 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:Donegal TownFundMinister Joe McHughStorm LOrenzolast_img read more

Birkett stuns McGregor to win Drak Challenge

first_img21 January 2014Andy Birkett snatched a sensational maiden title at the N3TC Drak Challenge Canoe Marathon on Sunday after exploiting a mistake by three-time champion Hank McGregor in the closing stages of the race, while Abby Adie won the women’s title for a fourth time. The Drak Challenge also served as the South African K1 River Championships.Racing on a low uMzimkulu River in KwaZulu-Natal, Birkett (EuroSteel) and McGregor (Kayak Centre/Team Jeep) started the 23km final stage from Callaway Bridge to Hopewell Farm side by side, with McGregor having won the first stage by a mere two seconds. The pair challenged each other throughout the final stage, but were still locked together as they entered the Lower Gorge, just 20 minutes from the finish.StuckMcGregor raced to the bottom of Mkhulu Rapid, where he got stuck on some rocks, while Birkett took another line that he had researched and managed to get a 50- metre lead on McGregor.“For the next two kilometres I looked back over my shoulder at every corner and every rapid to see if Hank was chasing me,” said afterwards. “Only when I realised that he had given up the chase did I start thinking about the fact that I might win the title.“I am really stoked with the win because it helps me prove to myself that my paddling is improving, and that I can mix it up with Hank McGregor and the flatwater marathon paddlers.”Birkett, who won the under-23 marathon world title in 2013, has made Underberg, where the Drak Challenge took place, a base for his Dusi training campaign with his partner Sbonelo Zondi.‘A daunting task’“It was a daunting task starting the final stage alongside Hank McGregor, and so it should be,” he admitted. “He is South Africa’s top canoeist and I think he will be forever, based on what he has achieved.“It was a very tough race. We weren’t giving each other an easy time out there, but that is what racing is all about, so I am a little surprised but very chuffed with my win here today.”Third placeDefending champion Grant van der Walt (Varsity College/Team Jeep) grabbed the last spot on the podium from K1 Dusi champ and the top under-23 finisher Lance Kime, with Len Jenkins holding off the gutsy visiting Australian Josh Kippen for the fifth place. Damon Stamp was in a class of his own as he romped to a comfortable win in the junior boys’ ranks.Women’s titleThe women’s title fell for a fourth time to Abby Adie (Best 4 Healthcare/Kayak Centre), who got engaged on the weekend to her boyfriend Kyle Solms. However, her romantic milestone didn’t afford her any leeway from teammate Robyn Kime, who closed down more than half of Adie’s overnight lead on the final stage.“I started in elapsed time and Robyn was in the first batch, which made it very difficult to keep track on where she was relative to me,” Adie explained after securing victory.Dusi Canoe MarathonThe Natal Canoe Club star will next now turn her full attention to her bid for the 2014 Dusi Canoe Marathon title, as her partner Czech partner Ana Adamova has just arrived back in South Africa for the final run-in to the big race in February.Kime won the CSA Silver medal, while Michelle Burn raced consistently to grab to third step on the podium. Fifth placed Jenna Ward took home the under-23 gold medal.RESULTSMenAndy Birkett 2:53:45Hank McGregor 2:54:39Grant van der Walt 2:57:09Lance Kime (u23) 2:57:11Len Jenkins Jnr 3:00:30WomenAbby Adie 3:15:18Robyn Kime 3:18:20Michelle Burn 3:24:29Alex Adie 3:27:40Jenna Ward (U23) 3:28:07Under-23 MenLance Kime 2:57:11Siseko Ntondini 3:02:03Owen Gandar 3:02:08Under-23 WomenJenna Ward 3:28:07Brittany Petersen 3:29:00Jordan Peek 3:35:37SAinfo reporterlast_img read more

Introducing Virtual Rewards 2.0!

first_img SharePrint RelatedIntroducing Virtual Rewards!August 24, 2017In “Community”Wir stellen Virtual Rewards 2.0 vor!May 14, 2019In “Deutsch”Inside Geocaching HQ Transcript (Episode 24) Virtual Rewards 2.0May 15, 2019In “Podcast” Geocaching HQ is excited to announce Virtual Rewards 2.0 to introduce another limited number of new Virtual Caches for the geocaching community. Beginning today, an opt-in web page is available for cachers to apply for a Virtual Reward. The page is open until June 1, 2019. Approximately 50,000 geocachers around the world meet the criteria to apply for a Virtual Reward. Those who previously received a Virtual Reward are not eligible to participate in Virtual Rewards 2.0.From all applicants, Geocaching HQ will randomly select up to 4,000 geocachers on June 4, 2019 to receive one Virtual Cache. Approximately 30 active community volunteers are receiving a Virtual Reward, as a thanks for giving their time to support the geocaching community.Winners will have one year to create their Virtual Cache. The caches must comply with specific guidelines. The first round of Virtual Rewards resulted in 2,668 new Virtual caches created between August 2017 and August 2018. Those new caches are generally very popular by several measures, including total Favorite points, Favorite point percentage, log length, and find frequency. In addition, the review process did not create any undue burden on community volunteer reviewers. However, the community voiced some frustration with the algorithm used to distribute those Virtual Rewards. With that feedback in mind, we devised this new process for Virtual Rewards 2.0.Learn more about Virtual Rewards 2.0 in this new episode of the Inside Geocaching HQ podcast. Here are answers to some common questions:Yay, Virtuals are back! Not exactly. Yes, we’re hoping to see up to 4,000 new Virtual Caches in the next year. But we want to make it clear that Virtuals remain a grandfathered cache type. Are Virtual Rewards distributed evenly among countries? No, but they will be more evenly distributed among countries than during Virtual Rewards 1.0 in 2017, when some more active countries received a large number. We will randomly select geocachers within each country, with a set number per country. The number was established by Geocaching HQ, with the intention of favoring countries less established with geocaching. We set the qualifying criteria for cacher hiders as low as possible, in order to achieve better geographic distribution. The approximately 50,000 cache hiders who meet the Virtual Reward 2.0 criteria represent 89 countries. During the 2017 launch, they were from 63 countries. Can I apply with more than one account that I own?If you own more than one Geocaching account, please apply only with one account. If we discover abuse, we reserve the right to remove a Virtual Reward.Could an account receive more than one Virtual Reward? No, an account can receive only one Virtual Reward, from either the 2017 or 2019 launches. Can a Virtual Reward recipient give their reward to someone else? No, Virtuals are still a grandfathered cache type. Therefore, adoptions are not possible. How do I find out when new Virtual Rewards are published?Premium members can set up Instant notifications to be aware when new Virtual Rewards are published. Also, use the Search tool to conduct a worldwide search for Virtuals. Will there be more Virtual Rewards in the future?Assuming Virtual Rewards 2.0 goes smoothly, we will consider launching a similar set of Virtuals in the future. But we would likely make changes to the selection process to encourage a new set of participants. Why not just make Virtual Caches available for everyone to hide?Because today’s Virtual Caches are rare, and because the remaining Virtuals tend to be well-liked, people often forget (or maybe never knew) that many problems led to the grandfathering of Virtuals in 2005.The Virtual Cache type was originally created so people could place hides where physical caches were not permitted, or where muggles were so heavy that a physical cache was not practical. While the intent of this cache type was positive, it created significant problems for reviewers and often led to poor cache quality. Some people used Virtual Caches as a shortcut to create basic caches that did not require maintenance. Guidelines were eventually updated to require Virtuals to have special qualities to set them apart from other caches. However, that introduced so much subjectivity that the review process became difficult for both reviewers and cachers. The decision was finally made to grandfather Virtual Caches and no longer permit this type of cache unless we could find a way to avoid the aforementioned issues. We’re hoping this limited Virtual Rewards release will help minimize the previous problems with Virtuals, while delivering more opportunities for the community to enjoy this beloved cache type. Most importantly, it’s a fun reward for cache owners who have contributed so much to the game.Share with your Friends:Morelast_img read more
