England captain Eoin Morgan created a new world record on Tuesday as he became the first batsman in ODI history to hit 17 sixes in an innings in the ongoing match against Afghanistan in Manchester.Morgan shattered the record which was jointly held by India opener Rohit Sharma, West Indies superstar Chris Gayle and former South Africa skipper AB de Villiers, who had hit 16 sixes each.Rohit had hit 16 sixes during his 209 against Australia in 2013. AB de Villiers matched it when he scored 149 against South Africa in 2015 and just a month later Chris Gayle emulated the record in the 2015 World Cup match against Zimbabwe when he hit 215 runs. He eventually departed for 148 off 71 balls in the very next delivery as he went for another big shot. Morgan hit just four boundaries during his record-shattering knock. He also became the first batsman in ODI history to score 100-plus runs in sixes in an innings.6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 #EoinMorgan hit 102 runs JUST in sixes!#CWC19 | #CWC19 pic.twitter.com/E3iLLTNs1hCricket World Cup (@cricketworldcup) June 18, 2019Morgan had brought up his century off 57 balls which was the fourth fastest in a World Cup match after Ireland’s Kevin O’Brien (50 balls vs England in 2011), Australia’s Glenn Maxwell (51 balls vs Sri Lanka in 2015) and South Africa’s AB de Villiers (55 balls vs West Indies in 2015).Morgan was superbly assisted by Joe Root in the 189-run partnership for the third wicket during which Root made 88 runs off 82 balls.advertisementThe Morgan-Root partnership today:189 runs101 balls17 sixes #ENGvAFG#WeAreEngland pic.twitter.com/V2il9RGsEkCricket World Cup (@cricketworldcup) June 18, 2019Before that Root was involved in a 120-run stand for the second wicket with Jonny Bairstow, who scored 90 off 99 balls.England ended up with the 6th highest team total in a World Cup match with 397 for 6 in 50 overs after they opted to bat first at the Old Trafford cricket ground.
